Letter Classification -Converting Letter To Number Classification

Classification Means analyse the elements and define a rule which is satisfied by all the elements in the group.

Converting Letter Classification to Number Classification: There are situations in which we can see that skipping of letters varies in all options or we can say that no particular rule can be derived to satisfy the elements.that is the skipping logic fails. For these type of questions, we can convert the elements of the group in into numbers using their alphabetical positions and they we can identify the rule using number classification logic.

Illustration: Find the odd one out in the group AG, FB, CE, DG

(1) AG                (2) FB           (3) CE             (4) DG

Answer : (4)

Solution  When we analyse the group  we see that skipping of letters varies in all options. Here, skipping fails. We can now convert the elements into numbers using their alphabetical position and will then identify the rule.

In AG, A is at position 1 and G is at position 7  and sum of digits 1+7 is 8.

In FB, F is at position 6 and B is at position 2 and sum of digits 6+2 is 8.

In CE, C is at position 3 and E is at position 5 and sum of digits 3+5 is 8.

In DG, D is at position 4 and G is at position 7 and sum of digits 4+7 is 11.

Hence we see that in the group DG does not satisfy the rule, So is the odd element in the group.

Illustration: Find the odd one out in the group BD, CI, DP, EZ

(1) BD                (2) CI           (3) DP             (4) EZ

Answer : (4)

Solution  When we analyse the group  we see that skipping of letters varies in all options. Here, skipping fails. We can now convert the elements into numbers using their alphabetical position and will then identify the rule.

In BD, B is at position 2 and D is at position 4  and we see that 4 is square of 2.

In CI, C is at position 3 and I is at position 9 and we see that 9 is square of 3.

In DP, D is at position 4 and P is at position 16 and we see that 16 is square of 4.

In EZ, E is at position 5 and Z is at position 26 and we see that 26 is not a square of 5 so is the odd element in the group.
